SIX THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GENEPI
An emblematic spirit of the Alps, genepi is very popular with consumers. With its digestive properties and unique aromas, it has a special place when enjoyed after meals. But do you know all the secrets of this Alpine plant? We have put together a glossary in order to answer some of the questions you may have about genepi.

1. 1. WHAT IS GENEPI?
Genepi is a spirits drink. These plants belong to the wormwood family (just like absinthe) and grow at altitudes of over 2,500 m in the rocky areas of the Alps. There are five main varieties of genepi, but the one we use most is artemisia umbelliformis: Yellow genepi, as in our Genepi Fragrance 42. It is an integral part of the local Savoyard heritage.
HARVESTING THE GENEPI PLANTS
Harvesting genepi plants is a delicate art. It is done by hand, between July and August, when the flowers are in full bloom. As a protected plant, the DDT (Department of Territories) imposes strict regulations on handpicking in order to protect and preserve the flowering. With this goal in mindé, we never gather from the same spot, we take care to pick all the flowers from the same plant, we cut the flowers with scissors so as not to tear off the plant and we leave at least one flower per plant. Respecting the environment and preserving this precious resource is our raison d’être.

3. MAKING GENEPI
Distillers use several manufacturing processes. At Maison M, we change the process according to our recipes. The different steps include maceration, which consists of infusing genepi sprigs in alcohol. We also use steam distillation in our stills. For example, the process of our Génépi 40 combines maceration and distillation, whereas for Fragrance 42 we only use distillation.
4. THE BENEFITS OF GENEPI
As well as being appreciated for its unique taste, genepi is renowned for its health benefits. In herbal medicine, genepi is used for its tonic properties, stimulating the body and the digestive system in particular. To make the most of all its benefits, try our infusion with genepi flowers.

5. HOW TO ENJOY GENEPI?
Despite popular belief, genepi isn’t just something to enjoy after a hearty winter raclette! It’s a truly elegant spirits, usually served at the end of a meal. In order to appreciate its complex aromas and herbaceous notes, you can drink it at room temperature or chilled over ice. For a modern touch, genepi can be used in a variety of cocktails. For example, in our in-house concoction, ‘A toute heure’ or for a revisited Spritz. It can also enhance your desserts by adding a few drops or be served as an infusion.
6. HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GENEPI?
Not all genepis are the same, so be careful when you buy your bottle. The best way to avoid making a mistake is to choose high-quality spirits made in a local Savoyard artisan distillery, such as Maison M.
Did you know that Maison M also harvests black genepi? Even rarer than yellow genepi, this wild flower is protected and can be found at altitudes of between 2,800m and 3,600 m. Allow yourself to be carried away by its liquorice and caramel notes.
Of special note: Genepi is much more than just a spirit. It’s a symbol of the craftsmanship and traditions of the Alps. Whether you’re a connoisseur of spirits or a curious person in search of new discoveries, genepi deserves a special place at the end of your meal.
Be sure to choose genepis made by local distillers.
